New to Alberta?
In order to obtain auto insurance in Alberta you will need the following for insurance and registration:
- An MVR also known as a drivers abstract from the province(s) or state(s) you’ve held a drivers license
- Insurance Claims Experience Letter from your previous insurance company(s)*
- Vehicle inspection report completed by a licensed mechanic for vehicles 12 years and older
- Out of province inspection for vehicles previously purchased or registered outside of Alberta **
* This is necessary to give credit to your past insurance history otherwise your rate will be reflected as a new driver at a higher premium
** This is only required by vehicle registries
TIP: Before you register a motorized vehicle you will need to obtain insurance first. Once you are given a liability certificate otherwise known as a pink card, you can take that along with your bill of sale or proof of ownership of the vehicle and register it at a registry office.
